A sweep deals with the flue. The firebox is the room-facing half of the system and it fouls differently: ash builds in the corners and holds moisture against the brick, acidic soot eats at the mortar joints, glass doors haze over with a baked-on film that ordinary cleaners will not shift, and the grate slowly corrodes where it sits in the ash. On an insert or a sealed stove there is a further layer — the baffle, the air wash channels and the gasket that keeps the burn under control.
