Tucker has an unusually high proportion of long-tenure ownership, and that produces a particular kind of chimney. Houses in Smoke Rise, Idlewood and around Main Street are largely 1950s to 1970s, frequently still with the family that bought them or their children, and the fireplaces have been used continuously for decades. A sweep deals with the flue. The firebox is the room-facing half of the system and it fouls differently: ash builds in the corners and holds moisture against the brick, acidic soot eats at the mortar joints, glass doors haze over with a baked-on film that ordinary cleaners will not shift, and the grate slowly corrodes where it sits in the ash.
