Atlanta inside the perimeter is a bungalow city, and that shapes every chimney we touch here. West End, Grant Park, Kirkwood and Adair Park went up largely between 1900 and 1930, when a fireplace was the heating system rather than a feature, and many of those flues were built as bare brick with no clay liner at all. A century of Georgia rain has since worked on mortar that was soft to begin with. The other half of the intown picture is the reverse problem: gut renovations that dropped a modern gas insert into an original masonry flue four times too large for it, which never draws properly and coats itself in condensate.

Wood smoke cools as it climbs, and what condenses on the way out is creosote — a black, tarry residue that hardens into a fuel lining the inside of your flue. Past about an eighth of an inch it will carry a fire, and a flue fire moves through a chimney in seconds. Atlanta makes this worse in its own way: nobody here burns steadily for four months, we burn hard for a fortnight in January and then abandon the fireplace until Thanksgiving. Cold masonry, damp masonry, smouldering fires and unseasoned oak all lay creosote down faster than steady daily burning would. Sweeping is the one piece of maintenance that removes the fuel rather than managing it.
